9 Seventh Graders Named Duke Scholars

Students honored for exceptional scores on college entrance exams Nine seventh graders from Abilene ISD middle schools have earned state recognition as 2017-18 Duke Scholars for their exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT college entrance examination. Sponsored by Duke University, the Talent Identification Program allows seventh graders from a 16-state region the opportunity to take the same ACT or SAT tests that high school students take when applying to college. Applications are now being accepted for enrollment next year in for the Center for Innovation, a mathematics and science magnet school program for Grade 5 students located at McMurry University. This program offers enriched/enhanced opportunities in mathematics and science using the Grade 5 curriculum as set forth by the state as the foundation for the students’ studies. AHS, CHS Junior ROTC Programs Earn Distinguished Unit Awards

The JROTC units at Abilene High School and Cooper High School have been selected to receive the 2017-18 Air Force JROTC Distinguished Unit Award. In an award letter written to each high school, Col. Paul C. Lips, national director of the Air Force JROTC, wrote, “The Distinguished Unit Award is limited to the very best of the best of our nation’s 900 Air Force JROTC units.” Only 276 units were chosen for the highest unit award possible in 2017-18. Welcome to the neighborhood! Burlington Stores donates $10,000 to Reagan Elementary

Burlington Stores, Inc., through its partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org, surprised the students and staff of Reagan Elementary School on Friday with a donation of $10,000 in celebration of its new store in Abilene. Representatives from Burlington Stores presented the check to Reagan principal Chris Halifax during an all-school assembly. A representative from AdoptAClassroom.org contacted Reagan Elementary administrators and helped to secure the donation, which will provide new supplies for each teacher’s classroom for the upcoming 2018-19 school year.
